The scenery was beautiful, but the traffic hit me immediately. Instagram rarely shows you hundreds of motorbikes weaving through roads or a journey that looks ten minutes away turning into an hour-long crawl. The town has an artistic energy that feels completely different from the coastal resort areas. Everywhere I looked there were galleries, workshops, paintings, sculptures, and creative spaces. Even someone with no interest in art would probably appreciate the amount of talent on display.

We stayed at Bali Dream Ubud, which had a pleasant layout and genuinely friendly staff. Unfortunately, the start of our stay wasn’t ideal.

A cockroach infestation greeted us during our first few days.

I’m not talking about one or two insects. After several nights, multiple cans of bug spray, and more encounters than I ever wanted, things finally improved. One particularly memorable night involved waking up with a cockroach crawling across my face.

I still get goosebumps thinking about it.

Thankfully, that issue was eventually resolved and we were able to enjoy everything else Ubud had to offer.

One thing I loved about this part of The Island of Bali was how easy it was to discover good food without planning. We found Mahesa Warung almost by accident and ended up returning multiple times. The rooftop views during sunset created a relaxed atmosphere, while the food consistently impressed us.

Another favourite was Umbi Cafe Bali. Their social media promotion offered a free dessert if you posted a photo and tagged them online. Since photography is something I enjoy anyway, it felt like an easy win. The staff were incredibly welcoming, and the quality of the food made it worth visiting regardless of any promotion.

Taman Dedari: A Jaw-Dropping Surprise

If there was one restaurant experience that genuinely exceeded expectations on The Island of Bali, it was Taman Dedari.

Sometimes destinations become overhyped online, but this place was the opposite.

We arrived without a reservation and were immediately blown away by the setting. Massive angelic statues surrounded the property, overlooking a lush valley below. The scale of everything was extraordinary.

Even after travelling extensively, it managed to leave us speechless.

The food was excellent, the service was fantastic, and the scenery alone made the visit worthwhile. For photographers visiting The Island of Bali, this location deserves serious consideration.

Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary

The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary is one of the most famous attractions on The Island of Bali, and after visiting, I completely understand why.

The setting is beautiful, the monkeys are entertaining, and the overall experience feels unique.

Keep a close eye on your belongings.

Stories about monkeys stealing phones, sunglasses, wallets, and other valuables are very real. Some monkeys seem remarkably skilled at identifying items worth taking. Whether they trade them for food or simply decide to keep them is another matter entirely.

Despite that risk, I thoroughly enjoyed the visit. The combination of wildlife, ancient trees, and temple structures creates countless photography opportunities.

Traffic can be brutal.

Bikes dominate the roads because they offer flexibility that cars simply cannot provide. After seeing the traffic firsthand, I completely understood why almost everyone seemed to own a scooter.

Eventually we rented a bike ourselves.

The freedom it provided transformed our experience. Suddenly, exploring became much easier, even if travel times remained unpredictable.

Owning a bike doesn’t eliminate traffic problems, but it certainly makes them more manageable.

The Unexpected Journey North

One of our longer adventures involved heading north to visit waterfalls.

Unfortunately, nature had different plans.

The weather changed dramatically, and we encountered torrential rain unlike anything we’d experienced in months. It was the sort of rainfall that instantly soaks everything and makes continuing almost impossible.

Before the weather turned, we stopped at Ulun Danu Beratan Temple.

This wasn’t originally part of our plan, which often seems to be when the best travel experiences happen.

The temple complex beside the lake was stunning. The scenery felt peaceful, the weather was perfect, and somehow I even ended up feeding a lemur while it sat on my shoulders.

It was one of those unexpected travel moments that becomes a lasting memory.

What made the experience even stranger was that bright sunshine suddenly transformed into torrential rain only a short time later.

Rumah Gemuk Bali and Rice Field Adventures

On the return journey we stopped at Rumah Gemuk Bali.

The venue felt like a giant greenhouse filled with impressive decorations and incredible views. The food exceeded expectations and provided a welcome break after hours on the road.

Like many visitors to The Island of Bali, I also wanted to photograph the famous rice terraces.

Finding the iconic locations turned out to be more difficult than expected.

Some places were closed, some weren’t in season, and a few locations appeared very different from how they looked online. Whether that was creative photography, careful editing, or AI-generated images, I’ll leave others to decide.

Even so, we still discovered beautiful rice fields that showcased why The Island of Bali remains such a popular photography destination.

A Cultural Event We Accidentally Timed Perfectly

One of the biggest highlights of our stay happened completely by chance.

During our time in Ubud, a major cultural and religious event was taking place.

The streets filled with locals wearing traditional clothing, carrying offerings, and participating in ceremonies. Ubud Palace became one of the focal points of activity.

As photographers, this was absolute gold.

However, it was also important to remember that these ceremonies are meaningful cultural and religious events, not tourist performances.

I made a conscious effort to remain respectful. Instead of getting close and disrupting activities, I used a longer 240mm lens to photograph from a distance. This allowed me to capture genuine moments without interfering with anyone’s rituals.

The Most Unexpectedly Fun Activity

One of the coolest activities we experienced on The Island of Bali was also one of the simplest.

We travelled into the mountains and joined a downhill cycling tour.

The concept is brilliant.

A vehicle transports you to a higher elevation, and from there you mostly cycle downhill through villages, countryside, and scenic landscapes.

As someone who isn’t exactly built for competitive cycling, I appreciated the fact that gravity handled most of the hard work.

The route was safe, support vehicles monitored the roads, and the experience was genuinely fun from start to finish.

It wasn’t a particularly long activity, but it remains one of my favourite memories from The Island of Bali.

The Artistic Side of Ubud

The artistic culture of Ubud deserves special mention.

Throughout my travels, I often avoid buying souvenirs because luggage space is always limited.

This time I failed completely.

Several experiences stand above the rest when I think back on The Island of Bali.

The cultural event in Ubud was unforgettable. Seeing local traditions taking place naturally rather than being organised specifically for tourists felt incredibly special.

Taman Dedari delivered one of the most impressive restaurant settings I’ve ever experienced. The giant statues, valley views, and overall atmosphere combined to create something genuinely memorable.

The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary provided endless entertainment and photography opportunities. While visitors should protect their belongings, the experience itself is fantastic.

Ulun Danu Beratan Temple surprised us completely. Its lakeside location and peaceful atmosphere made it one of the most photogenic places we encountered on The Island of Bali.

The downhill cycling adventure through the mountains was pure fun. Sometimes travel memories aren’t about famous landmarks but rather simple activities that exceed expectations.

What I Loved About The Island of Bali

The biggest strength of The Island of Bali is the diversity of experiences available.

Within a relatively small area, visitors can explore temples, waterfalls, beaches, rice fields, cultural events, art galleries, restaurants, and mountain landscapes.

The people were generally friendly, the food was excellent, and photography opportunities seemed endless.

Ubud in particular exceeded my expectations and became one of my favourite locations during the trip.

The traffic is genuinely frustrating.

Anyone planning to visit should prepare mentally for this reality. Short distances can take surprisingly long amounts of time.

Overtourism is another challenge in certain areas. Some locations feel crowded, especially during peak periods.

Accommodation can occasionally present unexpected issues as well. My encounter with giant cockroaches wasn’t exactly the peaceful jungle retreat I had imagined.

Aside from the insect situation during our first few days in Ubud, accommodation was generally comfortable.

What I Would Do Differently

If I returned to The Island of Bali, I would spend even more time in Ubud and less time in Seminyak.

Seminyak wasn’t bad, but I personally found it less interesting.

The beach felt fairly ordinary, and much of the area consisted of shops, restaurants, and tourist facilities.

The Island of Bali isn’t perfect, and that’s actually part of its charm. Once you move beyond the filtered Instagram images and accept both the positives and negatives, you’ll discover a destination filled with culture, creativity, beauty, and experiences that stay with you long after the journey ends.
