Introduction: Why I Chose Dubrovnik Croatia

Dubrovnik Croatia was the very first stop on what would become a much larger adventure. Looking back now, I honestly couldn’t have chosen a better place to begin. When planning the trip, Dubrovnik had always been one of those destinations that stood out on the map. The photographs looked incredible, the history was fascinating, and everywhere I looked online people seemed to describe it as one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.

Naturally, I was curious to see if it really lived up to the hype.

The reality was that we only had several hours available in Dubrovnik Croatia. This wasn’t one of those slow travel experiences where I could spend a week wandering around every corner. Instead, we had a limited amount of time and wanted to make the most of it. That meant focusing on the city’s most famous attraction: the ancient city walls.

Before arriving, I expected a beautiful old city beside the sea. What I didn’t expect was just how magical the atmosphere would feel. There is something special about Dubrovnik Croatia. The combination of bright stone streets, orange rooftops, medieval architecture, and sparkling Adriatic views creates an environment that feels almost unreal at times.

As soon as I stepped inside the Old Town, I could immediately understand why so many visitors fall in love with Dubrovnik Croatia. Every street seemed to tell a story. Every alleyway invited exploration. Every corner offered another photo opportunity.

Of course, I also had expectations shaped by years of seeing Game of Thrones scenes filmed here. While many destinations struggle to live up to their cinematic reputation, Dubrovnik Croatia somehow manages to exceed it.

The atmosphere was lively without feeling overwhelming. Tourists wandered through the streets with cameras in hand while locals carried on with their day. Restaurants spilled onto historic squares, church bells echoed through the city, and the sea was never far away.

Even before climbing the walls, I had a feeling that Dubrovnik Croatia was going to leave a lasting impression.

Arrival and Preparation for Dubrovnik Croatia

Arriving in Dubrovnik Croatia was relatively straightforward, although our experience was slightly different because we were travelling by car.

One thing that became apparent almost immediately was that parking can be difficult. Not only can it be hard to find available spaces, but the prices can also be surprisingly high. If I were visiting Dubrovnik Croatia again, I would seriously consider arriving by bus or using public transportation where possible.

Since we only had a few hours available, preparation was important. We knew the city walls were our main priority, so we headed there fairly quickly after arriving.

One of the pleasant surprises was discovering that entry into the Old Town itself is completely free. This is fantastic because even travellers on a tight budget can enjoy much of what makes Dubrovnik Croatia special without spending a fortune.

Before the trip, I expected Croatia to be cheaper than it actually was. Compared to Ireland, some things were certainly more affordable, but overall I found Dubrovnik Croatia more expensive than I had anticipated. This wasn’t necessarily a negative surprise, but it’s worth mentioning for anyone planning a visit.

The local atmosphere felt welcoming and safe. The streets were clean, the buildings were well maintained, and there was a sense of pride throughout the city. Even during a relatively short visit, it was easy to appreciate how much effort goes into preserving the historic character of Dubrovnik Croatia.

Exploring Dubrovnik Croatia and Walking the Famous City Walls

My First Impression of the Dubrovnik Croatia City Walls

The city walls are undoubtedly the headline attraction in Dubrovnik Croatia.

When we visited, it was off-season and we paid around โ‚ฌ20 each for entry. After doing a quick search later, I discovered that peak season prices can reach approximately โ‚ฌ40.

To be completely honest, I think โ‚ฌ20 was reasonable.

At โ‚ฌ40, I would struggle to justify the cost.

That’s not because the walls aren’t impressive. They absolutely are. The views are spectacular, the history is fascinating, and the experience is memorable. However, when I compare them to other historic walls I’ve visited, including the free city walls in Derry, the higher price feels difficult to justify.

Still, once I started walking around the walls of Dubrovnik Croatia, I quickly understood why they are so famous.

The Views Over the Adriatic Sea

One side of the walls offers uninterrupted views across the Adriatic Sea.

The water was stunning. Gentle waves crashed against the rocky coastline below while the sunlight reflected off the surface in every direction.

This was one of those moments where I found myself stopping repeatedly just to admire the scenery.

The sea surrounding Dubrovnik Croatia almost becomes part of the city’s identity. It frames every view and provides a beautiful contrast against the pale stone architecture.

As a photographer, I found myself constantly switching between wide landscape shots and tighter compositions. The combination of natural beauty and historic architecture made every viewpoint feel worthwhile.

Looking Back Across the Old Town

While the sea views were incredible, my favourite perspective was actually looking inward toward the Old Town.

From above, Dubrovnik Croatia becomes even more impressive.

The sea of orange rooftops stretches across the historic centre, creating one of the most iconic cityscapes in Europe. The bright colours stand out beautifully against the pale stone buildings and blue sky.

There is something timeless about this view.

It feels historic without feeling old.

The rooftops glow in the sunlight and create photographs that instantly capture the essence of Dubrovnik Croatia.

The Reality of Walking the Walls

One thing many people underestimate is how long the wall walk actually feels.

At first, it’s exciting.

Every corner presents another incredible viewpoint and you’re constantly taking photographs.

As the walk continues, especially during warmer weather, the heat begins to catch up with you.

By the final section, we were definitely feeling tired.

My advice is simple. Bring water.

If possible, have something to eat beforehand as well. The experience is far more enjoyable when you’re not battling dehydration under the Croatian sun.

Even with the fatigue near the end, walking the walls remains one of the best experiences available in Dubrovnik Croatia.

Photography Opportunities Everywhere

Photography enthusiasts will absolutely love Dubrovnik Croatia.

I don’t think there was a single point during our visit when I wasn’t seeing potential photos.

The city walls provide elevated perspectives.

The narrow alleyways create interesting compositions.

The churches add historical character.

The harbour offers maritime scenery.

The orange rooftops provide iconic city views.

Even ordinary corners of Dubrovnik Croatia seem designed for photography.

One of my favourite aspects was simply wandering without a plan. Some of the best images came from random side streets where the light happened to hit the stone buildings perfectly.

The Charm of Dubrovnik Croatia Old Town

Walking Through History

The Old Town is arguably just as impressive as the walls themselves.

What makes Dubrovnik Croatia special isn’t just the major landmarks. It’s the smaller details.

The worn stone pathways.

The hidden staircases.

The narrow alleyways.

The tiny cafรฉs tucked into unexpected corners.

Walking through the Old Town felt like stepping into a different era.

At times, it was difficult to believe this was a modern city rather than a historical film set.

The Game of Thrones Connection

Even if you’re not a huge fan of Game of Thrones, it’s impossible to ignore the connection.

Many scenes from King’s Landing were filmed throughout Dubrovnik Croatia, and once you’ve seen the show, certain locations immediately become recognizable.

One spot in particular drew my attention because it was associated with the famous “shame” scene.

Seeing these filming locations in person added another layer of interest to exploring the city.

That said, Dubrovnik Croatia doesn’t rely on television fame to attract visitors. The city was extraordinary long before Hollywood arrived.

Eating Among Historic Streets

One of my favourite travel experiences is finding somewhere simple to eat while surrounded by beautiful scenery.

That’s exactly what we did in Dubrovnik Croatia.

We sat among the historic streets, enjoyed some food, and simply absorbed the atmosphere around us.

Sometimes the best travel moments aren’t the major attractions.

They’re the quiet moments in between.

Watching people pass by while sitting among centuries of history felt incredibly relaxing.

Ice Cream and Unexpected Memories

Of course, no city exploration is complete without stopping for ice cream.

We found ourselves enjoying a treat while wandering through Dubrovnik Croatia, and while the photograph from that moment has its own amusing backstory, the memory itself perfectly captures the relaxed nature of the day.

Travel isn’t always about grand adventures.

Sometimes it’s simply about enjoying an ice cream while standing in one of the most beautiful cities in Europe.

Hotels in the Area of Dubrovnik Croatia

Visitors to Dubrovnik Croatia are spoiled for choice when it comes to accommodation.

For luxury travellers, Hotel Excelsior Dubrovnik offers stunning sea views and easy access to the Old Town. Villa Dubrovnik provides an exclusive experience with incredible waterfront scenery, while Hotel Bellevue Dubrovnik combines luxury facilities with exceptional views over the Adriatic Sea. These properties are ideal for couples, honeymooners, and travellers seeking a premium experience.

Mid-range travellers will find excellent value at Hotel Lero, Hotel Adria, and Royal Neptun Hotel. These hotels offer comfortable rooms, convenient locations, and reliable service without reaching luxury-level prices. They suit visitors who want comfort and convenience while still keeping costs manageable.

Budget-conscious travellers visiting Dubrovnik Croatia can consider Hostel Angelina Old Town, Hostel Sol, and Guest House Bradas. These options provide affordable accommodation while allowing guests to remain close to the city’s main attractions. They are particularly popular with solo travellers and backpackers exploring Croatia.

The best location ultimately depends on your priorities. Staying near the Old Town provides convenience for sightseeing, while properties slightly further away often offer better value and easier parking.

Highlights and Standout Moments in Dubrovnik Croatia

Choosing highlights from Dubrovnik Croatia isn’t easy because so much of the experience blends together into one memorable day.

The city walls were obviously a major highlight. The views across both the Adriatic Sea and the Old Town were spectacular from start to finish.

Looking down over the orange rooftops remains one of my strongest memories from the trip. It is one of those views that instantly justifies carrying a camera everywhere.

The Old Town itself deserves equal recognition. Simply wandering through the historic streets felt rewarding. Every alleyway seemed to reveal another interesting detail.

The marina was another enjoyable area to explore. While I jokingly hoped a billionaire on one of the luxury yachts might decide to adopt a struggling traveller, that dream unfortunately remained unrealized. Judging by the fact I’m sitting here writing this blog, you can safely assume nobody offered me a yacht.

The churches, viewpoints, harbour, restaurants, and hidden corners all contributed to making Dubrovnik Croatia feel like a destination where every visitor can find something memorable.

Honest Review of Dubrovnik Croatia

The Pros

Dubrovnik Croatia is genuinely beautiful.

The architecture is stunning.

The city feels safe.

The streets are clean.

The views are exceptional.

The history is fascinating.

The photography opportunities are endless.

Few destinations manage to combine natural scenery and historical architecture so effectively.

The Cons

The biggest downside for me was the cost.

While Dubrovnik Croatia is worth visiting, it was more expensive than I expected.

Parking costs can add up quickly.

Accommodation isn’t always cheap.

The city walls, particularly at peak season prices, feel expensive.

At โ‚ฌ20, I was happy enough.

At โ‚ฌ40, I would probably skip the walls and spend more time exploring the Old Town itself.

Comfort and Crowds

Even during our visit, there were plenty of people around, although it never felt overwhelming.

I can imagine peak summer becoming significantly busier.

Comfort levels were generally excellent. The city felt well maintained and easy to navigate.

Sleep Quality and Accommodation

Although we didn’t spend enough time in Dubrovnik Croatia to fully evaluate long-term accommodation, the city offers a wide range of options suitable for different budgets and travel styles.

Transport

Parking was perhaps the most frustrating aspect of the visit.

Public transport would likely be a better option for many visitors.

Walking is by far the best way to experience the Old Town.

What I Would Do Differently

If I returned to Dubrovnik Croatia, I would stay longer.

Several hours simply wasn’t enough.

I would spend at least two or three days exploring the city properly, allowing more time for photography, restaurants, and discovering areas beyond the main tourist routes.

Who Is Dubrovnik Croatia Best Suited For?

Dubrovnik Croatia is ideal for photographers, history lovers, couples, cruise visitors, Game of Thrones fans, and anyone who enjoys beautiful coastal cities.

Travellers seeking nightlife or ultra-budget destinations may find better options elsewhere.

For most visitors, however, Dubrovnik Croatia offers an unforgettable experience.

Without hesitation, yes.

That said, even if you never step foot on the walls, Dubrovnik Croatia remains worth visiting.

The Old Town alone provides enough charm, history, and beauty to fill an entire day.

For me, Dubrovnik Croatia was the perfect place to begin a major journey. It introduced me to Croatia in the best possible way and left me wanting more.

Sometimes a destination becomes famous because it genuinely deserves the attention.

Dubrovnik Croatia definitely belongs in the second category.
