Most people travelling between Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai take the bus.

To be fair, it makes perfect sense. The bus is cheap, direct, comfortable enough, and usually takes around three to four hours depending on traffic. If your goal is simply getting from one city to another, the bus is probably the easiest option.

But that’s not really how we like to travel.

When we started discussing the journey, we quickly agreed that taking a bus would mean missing everything in between. Northern Thailand is packed with mountain roads, viewpoints, cafés, hidden attractions, and random discoveries that you’ll never experience looking through a bus window.

That’s why we decided on a Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai by moped adventure instead.

The goal wasn’t simply reaching Chiang Rai. The journey itself was the attraction.

We spent time planning the route using Google Maps and Google Sheets, looking for interesting places to stop along the way. We searched for viewpoints, unusual attractions, cafés, gardens, and anything that looked worth pulling over for.

What started as a simple transport decision slowly turned into one of the most memorable road trips we’ve done in Thailand.

After a bit of planning, we settled on an early Saturday departure.

I’m not a fan of driving at night. Early mornings are fine, but once darkness arrives, especially on unfamiliar roads, I prefer to be finished for the day. Leaving early gave us plenty of time to enjoy the journey without feeling rushed.

Preparation was fairly simple.

We packed light, carrying only a backpack because we were staying just one night. We made sure to bring plenty of sunscreen because the Northern Thailand sun can be surprisingly intense when you’re exposed to it all day on a bike.

The route itself became one of the highlights of the trip.

If we saw something interesting, we stopped.

If we wanted a coffee, we stopped.

If we spotted a good photo opportunity, we stopped.

That freedom completely changes the experience.

One of our more unusual stops was a Japanese garden. Would I recommend making a special journey just to see it? Probably not. It was nice, but not exactly a must-see attraction.

However, as part of a larger Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai by moped road trip, it was absolutely worth pulling over and spending a little time exploring.

Those are the types of places that make road trips memorable.

They’re not world-famous attractions. They’re simply interesting places that break up the journey and add variety to the day.

Choosing the Right Bike

For this journey, comfort became more important than speed.

Normally, I have no problem riding a 125cc scooter around town. They’re perfect for exploring cities and shorter day trips.

For a long-distance Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai by moped journey, however, comfort matters.

The power is usually there on a 125cc bike, but the comfort often isn’t.

Less suspension, less room, and after several hours your backside definitely starts reminding you about every kilometre travelled.

For the longer ride, we opted for larger bikes.

The extra comfort made a noticeable difference.

Once we arrived in Chiang Rai, we switched back to smaller bikes for exploring around the city. That combination worked perfectly.

The Roads and Scenery

One thing that surprised me was just how enjoyable the roads were.

Northern Thailand offers some fantastic riding routes.

Rolling hills, mountain scenery, small villages, forests, and stretches of open road create an experience that feels completely different from city riding.

Photography opportunities appeared constantly.

Some viewpoints offered sweeping landscapes while others simply showcased everyday life in rural Thailand.

The scenery wasn’t always dramatic, but it was consistently beautiful.

Sometimes the best moments came from simple roadside stops where we could take in the surroundings, stretch our legs, and enjoy the ride.

Overnight in Chiang Rai

After a full day on the road, we eventually arrived in Chiang Rai.

Our accommodation for the night was Life Hotel Rong Khun.

The hotel was basic, but that was perfectly fine for what we needed.

We weren’t looking for luxury.

We needed somewhere clean, comfortable, and convenient for a good night’s sleep before another long day riding.

After spending hours on the road, we were exhausted.

Naturally, we decided to reward ourselves by completely pigging out on food.

A large pizza later, we were more than happy to call it a night.

Honestly, I don’t remember much after that.

The combination of fresh air, sunshine, riding, and exploring meant I slept like a baby.

Exploring Chiang Rai

The next morning started early.

Since we only had limited time, we wanted to visit some of Chiang Rai’s most famous attractions before beginning the return journey.

The White Temple was first on the list.

Even after seeing countless photos online, it still manages to impress in person. The intricate details, brilliant white architecture, and unique design make it one of Thailand’s most distinctive landmarks.

Next came the Blue Temple.

The deep blue colours create a completely different atmosphere compared to the White Temple, and together they make an excellent combination for first-time visitors to Chiang Rai.

We also visited a café we had been planning to check out.

Then it was time to get back on the road.

Luxury travellers may enjoy Le Méridien Chiang Rai Resort, The Riverie by Katathani, or Mora Boutique Hotel, all of which provide excellent comfort after a long day riding through Northern Thailand.

Mid-range travellers will find excellent value at Nak Nakara Hotel, Laluna Hotel and Resort, and Sooknirund Hotel. These properties offer a comfortable balance between affordability and convenience while remaining close to major attractions.

Budget-conscious travellers can consider Life Hotel Rong Khun, Baan Baramee Guesthouse, or Connect Hostel. These options provide everything needed for a short stay without significantly increasing travel costs.

For this particular trip, Life Hotel Rong Khun suited our needs perfectly. It wasn’t luxurious, but after a long ride, a comfortable bed and a hot shower were exactly what we needed.

Highlights and Standout Moments in Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai by Moped

The biggest highlight wasn’t actually Chiang Rai.

It wasn’t the White Temple.

It wasn’t the Blue Temple.

It wasn’t even any of the individual attractions we visited.

The highlight was the journey itself.

Travelling from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai by moped creates a feeling that’s difficult to replicate using any other form of transport.

The freedom is addictive.

Being able to stop whenever you want, take photos whenever something catches your eye, grab food when you’re hungry, or simply enjoy the scenery without rushing creates a completely different travel experience.

One of my favourite memories is simply riding through the countryside with no immediate destination in mind other than the next planned stop.

The roads, the scenery, the weather, and the sense of adventure all combined to create something special.

Absolutely.

But there are a few realities worth mentioning.

The journey is long.

Much longer than many people expect.

By the time you’ve spent a full day riding, your body definitely feels it.

Even with a larger bike, several hours on the road can become tiring.

The weather is another factor.

The sun can be relentless, which makes sunscreen essential.

On the positive side, I never felt unsafe.

Motorbikes and scooters are extremely common throughout Thailand. Most drivers are accustomed to sharing the road with them and generally give riders space when overtaking or navigating around hazards.

That said, I still prefer avoiding major cities like Bangkok on a scooter.

Northern Thailand feels much more relaxed.

If I were doing the trip again, I would probably add another overnight stop and spend more time exploring smaller towns along the route.

The experience suits travellers who enjoy the journey as much as the destination.

If your goal is simply reaching Chiang Rai quickly, take the bus.
