Thailand has become one of those places I keep returning to, and every time I visit, I seem to find another reason to love it. Chiang Mai was no exception. In fact, if there is one destination in northern Thailand that continues to draw travellers back year after year, it is Chiang Mai.

I had heard countless stories about Chiang Mai before my first visit. Friends talked about the temples, the markets, the mountains, and the relaxed atmosphere that seemed completely different from the busy beaches in southern Thailand. Chiang Mai sounded like the perfect balance between city life, culture, food, and adventure.

What really attracted me to Chiang Mai was how many different experiences could fit into a single trip. One day you can be exploring ancient temples and wandering around old city walls. The next day you can be hiking in the mountains, rafting through jungle rivers, or discovering hidden cafés overlooking stunning scenery.

My first impression of Chiang Mai was how relaxed everything felt. Despite being one of Thailand’s largest cities, Chiang Mai never felt overwhelming. The pace seemed slower, the people seemed friendlier, and the atmosphere felt much more laid back than Bangkok.

The old city immediately caught my attention. Surrounded by a moat and remnants of ancient walls, Chiang Mai has a unique character that blends history with modern life. Small cafés sit beside centuries-old temples. Boutique hotels occupy historic buildings. Street food vendors operate alongside trendy restaurants and coffee shops.

Before arriving in Chiang Mai, I expected a nice city with a few attractions. What I found instead was a destination packed with experiences that easily justified spending several days or even weeks there.

Chiang Mai is one of those places that slowly grows on you. The longer you stay, the more reasons you find to extend your trip.

One thing that makes my experiences in Chiang Mai a little different is that I have never actually flown there. Every visit to Chiang Mai has started with a train journey.

I’ve travelled to Chiang Mai using both first-class and second-class air-conditioned sleeper trains from Bangkok. Honestly, both options were excellent. The most recent journey felt surprisingly modern. The train was clean, comfortable, and much newer than I expected.

There is something special about arriving in Chiang Mai by train. Instead of rushing through an airport, you gradually watch the scenery change as northern Thailand unfolds outside your window. Rice fields, villages, mountains, and countryside slowly replace the urban landscapes further south.

The overnight sleeper train to Chiang Mai has become part of the adventure itself. Waking up and seeing the mountains surrounding Chiang Mai creates a memorable first impression that you simply don’t get when arriving by plane.

When I finally arrived in Chiang Mai station, the atmosphere immediately felt welcoming. The city seemed busy enough to feel lively but calm enough to remain enjoyable.

Planning for Chiang Mai was relatively easy. Accommodation options are plentiful, transport is affordable, and there are countless activities available. The challenge isn’t finding things to do in Chiang Mai. The challenge is deciding which experiences to prioritize.

My expectations of Chiang Mai were high before arrival, and surprisingly, the city exceeded them.

Walking Around Chiang Mai

One of the best ways to experience Chiang Mai is simply by walking.

The old town area of Chiang Mai is incredibly enjoyable to explore on foot. The moat surrounding the historic centre creates a natural boundary, making navigation relatively straightforward. As you wander through Chiang Mai, you’ll constantly discover temples, markets, cafés, and small hidden corners.

Walking through Chiang Mai reveals details you would easily miss from a vehicle. Small shrines appear unexpectedly between buildings. Street artists decorate quiet alleyways. Local food stalls produce incredible aromas that tempt you into trying yet another snack.

Chiang Mai rewards curiosity.

I found some of my favourite moments happened without planning. Turning down a random street often led to discovering an interesting café or beautiful temple.

The Famous Sunday Market in Chiang Mai

If you’re visiting Chiang Mai, the Sunday Walking Street Market is absolutely worth experiencing.

The market stretches for what feels like miles through the old town area of Chiang Mai. Stalls fill the streets selling everything from handcrafted souvenirs and clothing to artwork and local food.

I spent hours wandering through the Sunday market in Chiang Mai and still didn’t see everything. Shopping enthusiasts could easily spend an entire evening exploring.

The food scene at the market deserves special mention. Chiang Mai street food is one of the highlights of any visit. Every few metres seemed to offer another tempting dish.

The atmosphere during the Sunday market transforms Chiang Mai into something truly special. Musicians perform on street corners, families browse stalls together, and travellers from around the world mingle with locals.

It felt like the entire city came alive.

Food Experiences in Chiang Mai

Food is one of the biggest reasons to visit Chiang Mai.

Whether you’re eating at street stalls, local restaurants, riverside cafés, or modern coffee shops, Chiang Mai offers an incredible variety of options.

Some of my favourite meals in Chiang Mai were completely unplanned. I’d simply notice a busy local restaurant, decide to stop, and end up enjoying some of the best food of the trip.

The café culture in Chiang Mai also deserves recognition. Northern Thailand has become famous for its coffee scene, and Chiang Mai has embraced it fully. Stylish cafés appear throughout the city, often serving excellent coffee in beautiful surroundings.

One memorable afternoon occurred after a countryside drive outside Chiang Mai. We spotted several riverside cafés that looked too good to ignore. What started as a quick lunch stop became a relaxing few hours enjoying the scenery.

Muay Thai and Nightlife in Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai offers a lively but manageable nightlife scene.

One evening we visited a Muay Thai boxing venue surrounded by bars and entertainment spots. Even if you’re not a huge combat sports fan, watching Muay Thai in Thailand provides a fascinating cultural experience.

The atmosphere was energetic without feeling chaotic.

Unlike some destinations where nightlife dominates everything else, Chiang Mai feels balanced. You can enjoy an evening out and still spend the next morning exploring temples or markets.

Massages and Relaxation in Chiang Mai

One thing you’ll quickly notice in Chiang Mai is the number of massage shops.

They are everywhere.

After long days of walking around Chiang Mai, a traditional Thai massage can feel like a lifesaver. Prices are generally affordable, and the quality is often excellent.

For many travellers, relaxation becomes an important part of the Chiang Mai experience.

Adventure Activities Around Chiang Mai

While the city itself is fantastic, many of my favourite experiences happened outside Chiang Mai.

One memorable trip involved a mountain hike combined with a bamboo river ride.

The scenery was stunning, but I won’t pretend the hike was easy. My knee was causing serious problems that day, and parts of the climb felt like pure agony. There were moments when I questioned whether continuing was worth it.

Thankfully, reaching the summit changed everything.

The cooler mountain air, incredible views, and simple satisfaction of making it to the top made the struggle worthwhile. Sitting with a cold drink from a small shop near the summit remains one of my strongest memories from Chiang Mai.

The bamboo rafting section was much more relaxing. Floating through beautiful scenery provided a completely different perspective on northern Thailand.

The Roller Coaster Experience

One of the more unexpected adventures near Chiang Mai involved a mountain roller coaster attraction.

The experience is closer to a toboggan-style ride than a traditional roller coaster, but it was enormous fun.

The attraction itself was great, but what surprised me most was the journey there. The roads winding through the countryside outside Chiang Mai offered incredible scenery.

Sometimes the journey really is part of the experience.

White Water Rafting Near Chiang Mai

Another adventure that exceeded expectations was white water rafting.

I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect before booking, but it turned out to be one of the most enjoyable activities of the trip.

The combination of adrenaline, beautiful scenery, and teamwork made for a fantastic day. For visitors seeking outdoor adventure, white water rafting near Chiang Mai is definitely worth considering.

Chiang Mai as a Gateway to Chiang Rai

Chiang Mai also works perfectly as a base for exploring northern Thailand.

One of my favourite extended adventures involved a two-day cycling trip from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai.

Was it worth it?

Absolutely.

The famous White Temple and Blue Temple in Chiang Rai are incredible. Both attractions offer completely different styles and experiences, making them worthwhile additions to any northern Thailand itinerary.

Many travellers use Chiang Mai simply as a stopover, but I strongly recommend spending several days exploring before moving on.

For travellers heading towards Laos, Chiang Mai often serves as an important gateway.

Many people pass through Chiang Mai on their way to begin the famous Laos Slow Boat journey.

If that’s your plan, don’t rush through.

One event many visitors dream of experiencing is the lantern festival.

I attended a lantern event in Chiang Mai and enjoyed it, although it wasn’t quite what I expected. The atmosphere was still impressive, but I had imagined something slightly different based on the photos and videos I had seen online.

That said, watching lanterns rise into the night sky remains a memorable experience.

I’m already planning to return for another lantern festival in Chiang Mai and hopefully experience one of the larger events featuring thousands of lanterns and fireworks.

The old town remains one of my favourite parts of Chiang Mai.

During the hottest months, walking around Chiang Mai can become exhausting. The city is very walkable, but heat and humidity sometimes make long distances challenging.

Pricing remains reasonable compared with many international destinations, although some tourist-focused attractions naturally cost more than local experiences.

Transport around Chiang Mai is generally straightforward. Songthaews, taxis, ride-hailing services, and rental scooters provide plenty of options.

Sleep quality depends heavily on accommodation choice. Staying near nightlife areas can occasionally result in noise, while quieter parts of Chiang Mai offer peaceful evenings.

If I were doing future trips differently, I would probably schedule more time. Chiang Mai rewards slower travel. Rushing through means missing many of the experiences that make the city special.
